Inflation slows to 7.4% in March

Inflation fell again in March to 7.4%, a reading 0.8 percentage point lower than in the previous month, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) flash estimate released this Friday.

“Based on the information already collected, the year-on-year rate of change in the consumer price index (CPI) will have decreased again, to 7.4% in March 2023, a rate lower by 0.8 percentage points (pp) than the rate observed in the previous month. This slowdown is partly explained by the base effect due to the rise in fuel and food prices, verified in March 2022”, refers the INE, in a statement.

The final data regarding the IPC for the month of March 2023 will be published on April 13.

Still according to INE’s quick estimate, “the underlying inflation indicator (total index excluding unprocessed foods and energy) will have registered a variation of 7.0% (7.2% in the previous month)”. The variation of the index related to energy products “decreased in March from 1.9% in February to -4.4% and the index related to unprocessed food products will have slowed to 19.3% (20.1% in February )”.

Compared to the previous month, “the CPI variation will have been 1.7% (0.3% in February and 2.5% in March 2022)”.
