“It’s hard for me to answer all the calls. Last year we were at 15 stereos per day, today we are at 30 stereos per day.” The lumber dealer, Jérôme L’Ecole, has been traveling the roads of the Moselle for several weeks at a frantic pace. And for good reason, the demand for firewood has skyrocketed in recent months: +50% in one year.
It must be said that although the price of these logs has risen by more than 10% on average since June (today it has 90 euros per cubic metre), firewood continues to be especially competitive compared to other energy sources such as gas, electricity and even granules
As a result, many French people turn to wood for heating, to the point of putting producers to the test: “In 23 years of career, I had never seen that,” Christophe Glad, president of the industry, testifies to France Bleu Alsace. union of wood merchants in Alsace.
3 to 6 months before delivery
Unsurprisingly, the rush for wood has caused delivery times to lengthen: they now have between three and six months before receiving an order. Worse yet, some customers might not be served:
“Today we do not have availability” to “restock all customers” during the next peak in demand in December, stresses Maxence Piskorski, wood energy manager of the Piskorski company. “We are quite concerned about whether we will be able to deliver to all of our customers,” he continues. A situation that forces some companies to limit the maximum number of cubic meters that a customer can request.
This tension in the timber market is the business of thieves. According to TF1, more and more fake actors are offering firewood at knockdown prices on the Internet. Tempting offers that are rushed by some consumers who will never receive their order.
