In 2022, one in two French people made one or more donations to foundations or charities. And for this year, they are 55% predicting it.

Inflation has weighed on the purchasing power of the French for months. However, his generosity towards great causes remains intact. According to the annual barometer carried out by the Ipsos Institute for Orphans of Auteuil

, one in two French people say they have made at least one donation to a foundation or charity in the last year. A slightly higher level than in 2021 (48% vs. 50%).

The strong resilience of the generosity of the French is also manifested in the level of amounts paid to causes dear to them. In 2021, the average was 274 euros. Last year it reached 333 euros. It is certainly not a record level – in 2020, the average had reached €395 for the first time – but this 21.5% increase may surprise you.

55% of French people plan to donate this year

Especially since the young (18-35) and the elderly (over 65) have more donors (55% and 56% respectively) in their ranks than the national average. It is in these two age groups that the increase in prices is most painfully felt.

In other good news for French charities and foundations, a growing majority of French people plan to donate to them. 55% say they will make a move this year. Even if 39% of these potential donors warn that they will not be able to give as much as in 2022. While only 22% plan to be more generous than last year.

Natural disasters and conflicts are no longer on the podium of priority causes

Unless they change their minds during the year, the average amount of donations should fall, but with potentially higher numbers of donors than in 2022. The ranking of causes most loved by the French changes slightly.

Mentioned by 38% of those planning to donate this year, “health and medical research” still tops the list, still trailed by helping the poor (32%). But this year, animal advocacy (25%) takes precedence over emergency situations (natural disasters and conflicts), which is only mentioned by 22% of respondents compared to 33% last year. priority.
