Laurent Berger’s page will be directed to the CFDT. In charge of the first union in France since November 2012, the general secretary of the confederation announces that he will leave his post.
“I think that on June 21 I will leave a CFDT that is going well,” said Laurent Berger in an interview with the Worldstating that he had proposed to the national office that Marylise Léon, current number two, succeed him.
More than 10 years at the head of the CFDT
A decision that he describes as “thought out with maturity” and that he claims to have taken at the end of 2021. But the health and then political context with the presidential elections as well as his mandate as president of the European Trade Union Confederation have forced the deadline to be postponed.
“I have held this position for ten and a half years, a period close to the terms of my predecessors, François Chérèque and Nicole Notat,” he explains. “At first I was thinking of leaving a bit earlier, in June 2022, but it would have been difficult to do it at that time.”
Marylise Léon favorite for the succession
It is Marylise Léon, deputy general secretary of the CFDT since 2018, who has the favor of Laurent Berger to succeed him.
Laurent Berger is full of praise for his CFDT comrade. She “she fought vigorously during the unemployment insurance negotiations and is convinced that the ecological transition must be done in a socially just way. She is appreciated inside the house, she is close to people, human ”. he says.
The only candidate for his succession, Laurent Berger was re-elected in June 2022 with 96.68% of the vote and announced that he would not complete his term. His fight against the pension reform will therefore have been his last as head of the CFDT.
