Denmark and the Netherlands will buy 14 Leopard 2 tanks for 165 million euros to donate them to Ukraine, which is demanding more heavy weapons, the Danish Ministry of Defense announced Thursday.
“The Netherlands and Denmark today announce their intention to purchase, refurbish and donate 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine following our successful collaboration with Germany for the delivery of at least 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks,” according to a ministry statement.
The tanks will be supplied from “beginning of 2024”, specifies the ministry, which indicates that the estimated cost of 165 million euros will be “shared equally” between the two countries.
“Ukraine is asking for modern Western tanks to counter Russian aggression,” Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in the statement. “Since the beginning of the invasion, Denmark has supported Ukraine’s fight for freedom and we will continue to do so.”
In a separate press release, the Dutch Defense Minister considers that “the security of Ukraine and that of Europe are inextricably linked.” Germany and the UK each delivered 18 Leopard 2 heavy tanks and 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine last month.
