The prospect of the end of the regulated gas tariff on June 30 worries the French more and more. What will happen to the invoices, which provider to choose? The questions and above all the gray areas remain numerous.
In Franceinfo this Saturday, Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the CRE, the Energy Regulatory Commission, wanted to be reassuring.
In the first place, he points out that “prices have dropped a lot. So for gas, we found the prices before the implementation of the shield before October 2021, 40 euros per MWh, it is more than what we had in a historical period but it has returned to normality”. levels, which means that the banknotes will stabilize below the level of the shield”.
The regulated gas tariff “is not especially protective”
Emmanuelle Wargon also recalls that this famous regulated gas price, “changes every month anyway. In 2021 before the shield, the regulated gas price increased by 51% between January 1, 2021 and October 1, 2021 So that shows that this fee itself is not especially protective.”
“I would like to tell consumers: it will be fine because we have continuity measures, which means that it is not a blade”, underlines the manager.
And to explain the different scenarios: “we have consumers in two situations. The first is the ones that are actually in a contract that is really gas rate regulated. That is the time to start choosing a new contract. But if they don’t, they’ll switch to an offer that’s very close to the going rate.”
“And then, you have consumers who are in a market offer but whose offer is in turn indexed to the regulated price of gas and then their suppliers are also going to offer them a continuous offer,” he adds.
“no emergency”
However, the problem for consumers is to compare. How to choose this or that offer today without knowing precisely what the market prices will be in a few months?
“In both cases, it’s time to look at the suppliers’ offers, but there’s no rush,” says the manager.
“Starting in mid-May, the CRE will publish an indicative reference price with the subscription price and the price per kilowatt-hour so that the French can compare, have a point of reference when looking at the different offers.”
With the observed price drop, “suppliers will once again offer more protective fixed-price offers,” explains Emmanuelle Wargon, “and then you sign for one or two years and you no longer have any risk because you know how much you’re going to pay, it’s another way to protect yourself.”
