Montpellier airport has been closed indefinitely, a cargo plane left the runway overnight during its landing without causing injuries, the Hérault prefecture announced this Saturday.
“As a security measure and waiting for a specialized company to move the aircraft, commercial and cargo flights” will no longer be able to land in Montpellier indefinitely, the prefecture reported in a press release.
Submerged aircraft nose
It was 2:50 am when an Aéropostale plane, a Boeing 737 loaded with cargo, failed to land at Montpellier airport and ended its journey in the Mauguio pond located at the end of the runway. The nose of the aircraft is currently submerged.
Sixty firefighters from the Hérault department fire and rescue service, including water rescue specialists, were dispatched to the scene with a team from SAMU, the air transport gendarmerie brigade and airport teams. The Accident Investigation Bureau is expected on site.
