Denmark wants to invest 5,090 million euros to modernize its defense

To deal with “the current geopolitical situation”, the Danish Ministry of Defense announces an investment of 5,000 million euros to modernize the armies. By 2030, the country will dedicate 2% of its GDP to its defense.

Denmark announced on Thursday that it wanted to invest 38 billion crowns (5.09 billion euros) over ten years to modernize its defense sector.

“Some 27 billion crowns for defense equipment, buildings, information technology and personnel to meet the accumulated challenges (…) and an additional 11 billion crowns” for new investments, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. press, considering that the current geopolitical situation required “more resources to ensure the current defense”.

The need for new soldiers.

“At the same time, we must recognize that politicians have made decisions (…) based on assumptions that have turned out to be incorrect. This means that now we are faced with a larger task – to restore the defense foundations before consolidating them, ”he added.

The announcement comes after an audit of the Danish Armed Forces aimed at preparing for Defense Budget negotiations from 2024 revealed wear and tear on equipment and barracks and challenges in the field of information technology, in particular to meet with the new digitization requirements.

For the Chief of Defense, the need for new soldiers also cries out. “The task is huge. It’s not something you can solve in one or two years,” Flemming Lentfer told a news conference.

After announcing an increase in its military spending in 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Denmark indicated that it intended to dedicate 2% of its GDP to its defense by 2030, the objective of NATO of which it is a member.
