An “industrial level” waste? Carrefour defends itself after a video of bins full of food

After the publication of a video showing twelve containers full of food to be thrown away, the group justified this action by breaking the cold chain that would have “diverted products for consumption as well as for food donations.”

The video has been making the rounds on social media in recent days. We see the hand of a man opening twelve large containers full of food products such as pizzas, yoghurts, brioches, carrots, crème fraiche or salad. The man filming points out that the video is taken in the warehouse of Carrefour Allonnes, a logistics center located in Sarthe, near Le Mans.

In particular, he seized a bag of lettuce whose expiration date was May 6, while the video was taken on Wednesday, May 3.

According to the secretary of Force Ouvrière in Sarthe, Loïc Boyard, this video was taken by a Carrefour Supply Chain employee who, according to TF1, wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. The aforementioned strike movement was against the pension reform and dates from last week.

It interrupted the supply from the logistics warehouse to 500 Carrefour stores in a radius of 200 km, according to what the union representative explained to West of France: “We block from Wednesday, April 26 at 10:00 p.m. to Friday, April 28 at 12:00 p.m. knowing that they can no longer load after 12:00 p.m. There are no comings and goings on weekends or holidays. they resume on Tuesday, May 2. That day, the fresh shelves were empty in some Carrefour in Nantes.

FO plans to investigate on his side

According to Loïc Boyard quoted by TF1, the twelve full containers represent “more than a ton of goods” wasted.

The Carrefour group was quick to react to the scale of the criticism online. with the diary West of Francethe company explains that “Carrefour employees had to face logistical difficulties in terms of deliveries and cold chain management” linked to the blockade of the premises.

Carrefour specifies that the products in question “have been incorporated into a biomethane recovery sector.”

But FO does not abandon the cold chain argument that “it is not valid for the stocks of shallots, potatoes”. “Neither because of the bags of salad that on May 3, if there had been a cold since April 28, they would be of a different color and in the process of visible putrefaction,” he adds.

TF1 indicates that the union organization plans to “carry out its own investigation to verify the elements provided by the group.”
