Shell Chairman Andrew Mackenzie was unable to open the oil group’s general meeting of shareholders on Tuesday due to the irruption of environmental activists who attacked the CEO, Wael Sawan.
Arrested in the middle of his keynote speech, the Shell chairman then saw several activists sing in chorus “Go to hell, Shell, and don’t come back”, to the classic “Hit the Road Jack” made popular by Ray Charles. .
Security guards then evicted some of the activists in a scene reminiscent of the riots seen last year at the previous general assembly.
Oil groups and the financial institutions that support them are increasingly the target of protests. TotalEnergies’ general meeting, scheduled for Friday, could also be disrupted.
