The head of the FBI declared this Friday, October 31, that a “potential terrorist attack” planned for the Halloween weekend in Michigan, in the northern United States, had been thwarted.
“This morning, the FBI thwarted a potential terrorist attack and arrested several people in Michigan suspected of planning a violent attack over Halloween weekend,” Kash Patel wrote in X.
He did not give additional details, but according to CBS News, which cites police sources, the potential attack would be “inspired” by Daesh.
Five people between 16 and 20 years old arrested
American media report that five people between 16 and 20 years old were arrested on Friday. At least one of them is said to have known a former member of the Michigan National Guard, arrested in May for plotting an ISIS-inspired attack on a US Army base in suburban Detroit, CBS noted.
According to US media, the FBI had been following an online discussion about this attack for some time.
According to CNN, the participants in the discussion had discussed this attack, had trained with automatic weapons at a shooting range and had made reference to “pumpkin day”, a symbol of Halloween.
In a Facebook post, Dearborn police said the FBI acted early Friday in this suburban Detroit city. “We want to reassure our residents: there is currently no threat to the population,” he said.
