A commission is created in Corsica to fight against “mafia practices”, for the first time in France

Corsican elected officials voted this Friday in favor of the creation of a commission to fight against “mafia practices”, a new body that must, in particular, “propose new measures at the legislative level.”

The elected representatives of the Corsican assembly voted unanimously this Friday, October 31, in favor of a report on the creation of a commission to fight against “mafia practices”, a first in France. This new body must “study mafia phenomena” and “the impact of mafia crimes on Corsican society and its victims”, but also “improve existing systems and propose new ones at the legislative and regulatory level”, the report indicates.

The commission will be made up of 35 people, divided into three colleges: 16 elected officials of the Corsican assembly, six members of the assembly’s advisory bodies, such as the youth assembly, and 13 representatives of civil society, members of associations, the Human Rights League and anti-mafia groups.

Anti-mafia coordination demonstration on November 15

The presidency of this new body will be shared between civil society and elected officials, the report further specifies. The French State will not be permanently represented on this commission, but representatives may be invited, depending on the topics discussed. An absence that Jean-Martin Mondoloni, president of the right-wing group “Un Soffiu novu,” deplores.

“It is up to the State to provide solutions and means. It must participate in this commission,” he judged.

In a letter sent to elected officials before the debates, the anti-mafia collective “Massimu Susini”, creator of the initiative, had asked for a “true tool of analysis and struggle” and not “an organ of talk.”

On February 28, 2025, the Corsican assembly voted unanimously in favor of a deliberation against “mafia practices” committing to “establish the rejection of these practices (…) as a priority of the public action of the Corsican community.” On November 15, a demonstration organized by the anti-mafia coordination is planned in Ajaccio.

Corsica leads, at the national level, the number of homicides reported to the population, with 18 homicides and 16 attempted homicides in 2024 for 355,000 inhabitants.
