The Paris city hall will not regulate the prices of rental accommodation in Paris for the summer of the 2024 Olympic Games, Ian Brossat, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of housing and spokesman for the PCF, said this morning, a guest of Franceinfo. “The city of Paris does not have the possibility to regulate the price of tourist rentals,” he said.
Up to €1,650 per night on Airbnb
Some Parisian landlords are speculating on this major sporting event by inflating their rental prices, which can go as high as 1,650 euros per night on the Airbnb platform, BFMTV reported last month.
“If you go on vacation at the time of the Olympics, you have the possibility of renting your accommodation and putting a little butter on the spinach.” This is the message that the deputy for Anne Hidalgo wanted to convey to the Paris City Council.
Maximum 120 days per rental year
In fact, the municipality has no intention of implementing special rules to prevent the explosion in tourist rental prices, estimated at 40,000 in the capital. “There are already rules that apply and will continue to apply during the Olympic period,” explained Ian Brossat.
Owners are authorized by law to rent their main accommodation for up to 120 days a year, or approximately 4 months, on a tourist accommodation platform. A maximum duration that Ian Brossat would like to review downward, up to 60 days. “People who are on vacation four months a year and have the possibility of renting their accommodation four months a year, it is still relatively rare,” he says.
He also noted that “there is no limit on compensation” when it comes to hiring.
No more new tourist accommodation in certain districts
In a context of almost a shortage of rentals and “real estate tension”, “we decided to regulate the Airbnb phenomenon, (…) because we noticed that in a certain number of districts these tourist rentals invaded us and that ‘a certain number of owners transformed their year-round accommodation in furnished tourist accommodation,’ says Ian Brossat, who for him constituted so many “fewer accommodations to accommodate Parisians”.
For this reason, in certain very touristy districts, the municipality has decided to prohibit the transformation of houses into furnished houses for tourist rental. “As part of our future local urban plan in June, we are going to completely ban the creation of new tourist accommodation (…) in a certain number of districts, I am thinking of the Marais or Montmartre”, announced Ian Brossat.
