Property owners who have received more than four million debt collection letters from IMI have until Wednesday to pay the first installment or full tax.
The Municipal Property Tax (IMI) is paid in one installment in the month of May when the value is less than 100 euros, but is divided into two or three installments (paid in May and November or May, August and November) when their value fluctuates between EUR 100 and EUR 500 respectively or more than EUR 500.
However, it has been four years since the first settlement included a payment reference for the entire tax, allowing taxpayers with amounts above €100 in the month of May to “settle” their IMI accounts and thus waive split payment.
According to data from the Tax and Customs Administration (AT), provided in response to Lusa, 4,082,440 IMI assessments were imposed this year, of which 916,359 amounted to 100 euros.
In this total there are still 2,486,548 with tax amounts between 100 and 500 euros and 679,533 above 500 euros.
The IMI rates are set annually by the municipalities, in a range between 0.3% and 0.45% (for urban buildings and building land), and it is also up to them to decide whether to join the IMI family , a mechanism that gives a discount to live-in families, or the application of increased rates to vacant or dilapidated buildings.
