The national debt rose to 279,967 million euros in April

Public debt from the perspective of Maastricht, which counts for Brussels, rose by 919.32 million euros on an annual basis in April to 279,967.05 million euros, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) reported this Thursday.

According to the central bank, the chain increase amounted to 670.51 million euros, with this indicator reflecting “the growth of liabilities in deposits”.

This evolution reflected the growth of liabilities in deposits [1.120,09 milhões de euros], with issuance of savings certificates for an amount of 1,700 million euros. On the other hand, there were net write-offs on long-term debt securities [-330,83 milhões de euros] and loans [-118,75 milhões de euros]”says the BdP in a statement about the chain variation.

Also in April, government deposits were reduced by about EUR 200 million. For example, the government debt deducted from deposits increased by EUR 915.7 million to EUR 256,877.7 million.

On an annual basis, the increase in government debt amounted to 883.92 million euros.

In March of this year, government debt from a Maastricht perspective rose to 114.0% of gross domestic product (GDP), 0.1 percentage point more than at the end of 2022 and less than the 124.6% of the same period.
