Is the reopening of trade negotiations imminent? This was suggested by Jean-Philippe André this morning on the set of Good Morning Business. Following Bruno Le Maire’s threat of a tax sanction against the 75 largest agri-food manufacturers, the president of the National Association of Food Industries (ANIA) tried to defuse tensions: “We want to avoid everything that is fiscal.” and the name and shame should not happen in a country like ours”.
If he refused to use the term “negotiations”, industry representatives thus indicated that 30 to 35 of the companies targeted by the Bercy boss said they had made appointments with distributors. He also acknowledged the lack of communication with the Ministry of Economy and Finance: “Maybe it’s our fault for not informing your teams enough, we will do it today. We are the number one industry in this country.” [Ils ont] a relationship of trust with our brands, whether regional or national, for more than 100 years: do you think we want to put that into play in the last six months? No way, so we’ll explain.”
The decline has begun
Jean-Philippe André insisted that the slowdown in food inflation was already noticeable, citing an increase of 14% in May from almost 16% in March. “We have been saying it for a few weeks, there is a phenomenon that is taking place, he stressed, which is not fast enough for the people who are the first to be interested, that is, the consumer who is going to translate that into purchasing power, you have to listen to it and it is also bad for us in terms of competitiveness against distributor brands, but the phenomenon has begun”.
