pension reform

The pension reform is the political project that ignites the start of Emmanuel Macron’s second five-year term. After weeks of debate and great social protest, the use of 49-3 in the National Assembly, the Constitutional Council validated the bulk of the Government’s text on the pension reform, and in particular the postponement of the legal retirement age to 64 years. It was a campaign pledge by Emmanuel Macron ahead of his re-election in April 2022. Élisabeth Borne’s government unveiled on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 its controversial and unpopular pension reform, culminating in the postponement of the legal age retirement at age 64, instead of the current 62, and after having promised and considered 65. This postponement is associated with an acceleration of the extension of the contribution period, which increases to 43 years before the 2035 horizon set for the Touraine reform.
