After Germany, Belgium is investigating unidentified drones seen on a military base

The base of Elsenborn, near the German border, houses a training camp for the Belgian army and NATO. The previous day, this Thursday, October 2, Munich’s airport was interrupted by an overview of drones.

Belgium in turn overwhelmed by suspicious drones. After Denmark, Poland, Estonia or even more recently Germany, the Belgian military base of Elsenborn, located in Butgenbach, near the German border, saw fifteen drones not identified this Friday, October 3.

The Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken, did not give details about this incursion, but confirmed the information to VRT and said a survey was underway.

According to the Belgian media, these drones were detected around 1:45 am above this space of 28 kilometers where fire exercises and troops training are usually carried out on the Belgian army and NATO.

This situation comes in a tense international context with several drone raids, especially Russians, in the European sky, including the Danish sky shortly before the European summit in Copenhagen.

The European sky examined

The Belgian minister Theo Franken said he did not know the origin of these drones, but has pointed out the Russian hybrid threat. Several European countries such as Poland or Denmark have attributed recent incursions to their airspace to Russia.

Air traffic was temporarily suspended at Munich airport tonight due to an overview of drones of unknown origin. This same day, Emmanuel Macron said that drones that violate European airspace could “be destroyed.”

During a speech in mid -September, the president of the European Commission begged the establishment of a “drone wall” on the eastern border of the European Union. However, the presence of drones in Belgium shows that suspicious incursions can take place far from this border.

“We have to invest in detection systems and strengthen our anti-chucle control capabilities to eliminate these devices if necessary. I actively work on this, but it takes time,” Theo Franken told VRT.
