The government has updated the value of the contribution paid per student to special education colleges from 511 euros to 651 eurosaccording to a regulation published this Monday in the Diário da República.
The update of values had been negotiated between the Ministry of Education and representatives of special education colleges and inclusion information centers since late last year.
According to the regulation published in the Diário da República, financial aid for students between the ages of 6 and 18 is set at EUR 651.26 per month, an increase of about 27% compared to the current 511.89 euros.
The regulation does not provide for retroactive payments to the beginning of the school year, but takes effect on 1 January.
“The financial assistance provided to students of private special education schools is intended to provide free education to students who will be between the ages of 6 and 18 on September 15,” the ordinance said.
In addition to co-payments, the values referring to social school action for students covered by free education were also revised, with the food subsidy going from 74.06 euros to 100.30 euros per month.
The value of the contribution paid by the Ministry of Education to special education schools and inclusion information centers had not been updated since 2008. At the start of the school year, some institutions warned of the risk of closing their doors, claiming that the amount paid by the Ministry of Education was insufficient to maintain the same services.
