Paper, cardboard, metal… Brussels points to France’s delays in recycling waste

A report by the European Commission points to the delay of most European countries, including France, in reaching the objectives set for 2025 aimed at reducing and recycling municipal waste.

The European Commission is sounding the alarm. According an “early” warning report published on Thursday, most member states “are at risk of missing the municipal waste reuse and recycling readiness targets set for 2025.” This waste is collected and treated by or for the municipalities. They consist mainly of plastic, paper, cardboard and metal packaging.

Of the 27 EU countries, only a third (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia) are “on track to achieve the targets”.

These countries are likely to miss the target of preparing to reuse and recycle 55% of municipal waste and recycle 65% of all packaging waste by 2025.

additional efforts

Between 2013 and 2020, the total volume of packaging waste generated in the EU increased by 13% to almost 80 million tonnes. A directive establishes a recycling target of 65% of this waste by 2025 with specific targets by material for paper and cardboard, glass, aluminium, plastic and wood.

The directive calls for 70% recycling by 2030 for all packaging and material-specific targets for paper and cardboard, glass, aluminium, plastic and wood.

As for all municipal waste, the framework directive provides for a recycling of 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035. For this, the countries of the Union must organize the “selective collection of waste and the adoption of national management plans and waste prevention. programs”.

The authors of the report fear a “risk that certain Member States will not achieve these objectives “if no additional effort is made”.
