United States: inflation slowed sharply in May to 4% from 4.9% in April

Economists had forecast inflation of 4.1% in May in the United States.

US consumer prices slowed more than expected in May, official statistics showed Tuesday. The price index for consommation (CPI) of the Département du Travail is stable at 0.1% in May in monthly glissement, against 0.4% in April, and at 4% south of the year, against 4.9 % in April.

Economists polled by Reuters on average expected a slowdown to 0.2% monthly and 4.1% year-on-year.

If we exclude volatile items such as food and energy, the so-called core inflation (“core CPI”) rose 0.4% in May in one month, while in one year its growth amounts to 5.3%, in line with estimates of economists polled by Reuters.
