The Serie The idol, is cancelled, HBO announced Monday, ending a highly controversial series since its inception. The Idol, “one of the most provocative original shows,” as the channel called it through a spokesperson, stops there.
“Après mûre réflexion, HBO, ainsi que les créateurs et les producteurs, ont décidé de ne pas donner suite à la deuxième saison. Nous sommes reconnaissants aux créateurs, aux acteurs et à l’équipe de tournage pour leur incroyable travail”, encore encore chain.
Devastated by criticism
The first season of the series, starring The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depp, concluded on July 2, with only five episodes instead of the six announced. The idol It had a complicated fate even before its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival and its streaming.
Chaotic shooting, director fired and replaced by Sam Levinson, the creator ofEuphoria, delays and rewrites, the series has not been spared from controversy. Nor was it spared from the critics, who criticized it, calling it “sexist, pornographic”, “poor quality”, “whoreclick”…
The idol tells the story of Jocelyn, nicknamed “Joss” (Lily-Rose Depp), a pop star trying to get back into the spotlight after a rough patch following the death of her mother. She then meets Tedros (Abel Tesfaye), who will disturb her return to the heights.
The series, which also takes an ironic look at its time, mocks an “intimacy coordinator” who tries to reconcile the demands of the singer’s image contract and her desire to dispose of her body as she pleases, or denounces the formatting of the current musical production. References to different stars such as Britney Spears or Kim Kardashian are also evident.
