The “Tintin Diary Version” album hits bookstores Oct. 4, adorned with a dossier that sheds light on Hergé’s work and the context of the time, according to a publishing schedule from the publisher.
The boards of the original version, initially published in Tintin magazine, had lain dormant in its archives for 60 years. Restored with care and meticulousness, these previously unpublished documents allow us today to put a new shine on history,” says Casterman in his book launch.
Castafiore JewelryTintin’s 21st album, it was published in the Tintin newspaper between July 1961 and September 1962, at the rate of one page per week.
Criticism of the society of the spectacle
The version published in volume, in 1963, is slightly different. Hergé modifies or simplifies the decoration of certain boxes to highlight the action taking place in the foreground. The coloring is also redone.
Sales of the album were estimated, in all languages combined, at 10 million copies in 2021, the year in which a pencil sketch on page 54 sold at auction (for €143,000).
Fans like the album for its iconoclastic nature, with action confined to and around Moulinsart castle, absurdist humor, a very modern critique of show business, and exploration of the personality of Captain Haddock.
For another album, Pharaoh’s Cigars, Casterman published a new version in October 2022, where the black and white originals from 1932-1934 were restored and colored. Readers are most familiar with the 1955 edited color version.
