The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, published this proximity to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, May 9 on Friday, May 9, despite criticism of the European Union that had been strongly advised against Moscow.
Robert Fico, known for his Prorussian positions, told his host that “he had no problems” to accept Kremlin’s invitation to attend the end of World War II in the Russian capital.
“On the contrary, it was an honor to receive this invitation, which I accepted with joy,” he said during a meeting with Vladimir Putin broadcast on Russian state television.
The head of the European Union diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, had asked European leaders not to participate in the commemorations of May 9 in Moscow, and he was the only EU leader to attend.
“Friendly Relationships” between Russia and Slovakia
He had to change his program after the Baltic states had banned their plane flying over their territory to reach the Russian capital. Robert Fico described this prohibition of “children’s and fun game.”
The Slovak Prime Minister also said that Slovakia would veto that the Brussels plan to do without Russian hydrocarbons if it would be adopted unanimously.
Vladimir Putin assured Robert Fico that he would do “everything that is in his possession to restore ties with Slovakia, which, according to him, were” frozen “under western pressure. “We have always had friendly relationships with Slovakia,” he said.
Like its Hungarian neighbor and Alia Viktor Orban, Robert Fico has repeatedly criticized the support of the European Union to Ukraine since the beginning of the Moscow invasion, as well as the Russian isolation policy directed by Brussels.
The Slovak leader already met with Vladimir Putin in December 2024 to discuss the gas supply.
