A search begins to find a Paul McCartney guitar, lost in 1969

“The Lost Bass Project” should make it possible to find a guitar that belonged to Paul McCartney from 1961 to 1969 and which mysteriously disappeared.

Notice to fans of the Beatles, lovers of musical instruments. You have to find the lost guitar of Paul McCartney. It is a Höfner bass, the first, purchased in 1961 at the Steinway Musikhaus in Hamburg. And who mysteriously disappeared eight years later.

The instrument is “the most important bass in the history of music”, according to the brand of the instrument, at the initiative of this investigation called “The lost bass project”. This bass appears in Beatles songs during this period, especially hits. Love me AND she loves YouEITHER Twist and Shout.

The German manufacturer thus asks the public to be its “eyes and ears”. Therefore, everyone, around the world, is invited to participate in this great guitar search and share any information that may help find it.

“Paul would be delighted”

“Paul McCartney has given us a lot in the last 62 years. The Lost Bass project is our chance to pay him back,” explains the project team, made up of three enthusiasts, Nick Wass, former Höfner marketing director, and a great bass specialist, Scott Jones, music journalist and Naomi Jones, television producer.

It was in 1969, during the recording sessions for Return, recently brought out of limbo by Peter Jackson’s documentary, that the instrument disappears. Soon after, the Beatles broke up.

“From talking to him, I know Paul would be very happy, excited, if that bass came back to him,” Nick Wass told BBC and Channel 4.
