An Argentine artist died of a heart attack on Friday night while performing on stage at the Ambronay (Ain) baroque festival, where the show was interrupted and the audience was evacuated, firefighters and organizers learned.
“A 54-year-old man, a member of the group on stage, died from an illness during a performance,” the Ain Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) reported on Saturday.
This is the Argentine baritone Alejandro Meerapfel, who has already performed on numerous occasions at the Ambbatiale d’Ambronay. “His sudden disappearance leaves us in shock,” the management of the Ambronay Cultural Meeting Center reacted in a press release.
Psychological support provided.
The Cappella Mediterranea ensemble and the Namur chamber choir were on stage at the Ambronay Abbey under the direction of the Argentine director Leonardo García Alarcón, when the artist felt unwell. The program was broadcast by France Télévisions on Culturebox.
The emergency services intervened and “the public was quickly evacuated and a request for possible psychological support for the troops was also sent to center 15,” says the Sdis.
The Ambronay festival, one of the main European baroque events each year, celebrates its 44th edition from September 15 to October 8.
