“He is not my king”: anti-monarchy activists demonstrate for the first time in Buckingham

A small group of anti-monarchy activists managed, posing as tourists, to lead the first demonstration of its kind at Buckingham Palace.

They had time to take a photo. Eight anti-monarchy activists carried out a symbolic action inside Buckingham Palace on Saturday. This is the first event of its kind, within the palace grounds.

Posing as tourists, the eight activists unveiled, once in the palace, a black T-shirt with a large yellow letter that read “not my king”, not my king, the war cry of the anti-monarchists.

“A fantastic moment for Republicans”

The photo was posted on Twitter by the Republic account, which campaigns for the end of the monarchy in the United Kingdom.

“This is a fantastic moment for the country’s Republicans, with a group of ordinary citizens defending democracy in the adopted homeland of the monarchy,” the movement tweeted.

If only 27% of British people declared themselves in favor of the abolition of the monarchy in September, the day after the death of Queen Elizabeth, the change of monarch exacerbated this feeling. On the occasion of the Queen’s Jubilee in June 2022, some posters appeared with the slogan: “Make Elizabeth the Last”. Or in French: “Make sure Isabel is the last.”

Many of the trips of King Charles III are marked, therefore, by some anti-monarchist manifestations. Several activists gathered along the procession route were arrested before Charles’ coronation.

Others chanted anti-monarchy slogans during the second coronation ceremony of Charles III in Scotland.
