Daniels’ reasoning made sense. Feeny wasn’t a name viewers regularly heard on TV or in real life. The 95-year-old actor looked back on the sitcom landscape of the ’90s, where professors were vandals for the main characters rather than fully developed characters (eg. saved by the bell). Fortunately, Jacobs assured the veteran actor that the role was “good” and “respectable”. His words were enough to convince Holy in another place actor to become the benevolent neighbor and teacher.
The BMW The showrunner’s words only eased Daniels’ worries for a moment. The actor’s displeasure spilled over into the character as tensions escalated while reading the charts for the pilot (not uncommon for the ABC sitcom). His wife, Bonnie Bartlett, said his displeasure led him to resign after reading the first script.

According to Bartlett, her husband thought the writing was not good. Giving up while reading the painting prompted Jacobs to rewrite the character based on Daniels’ acting pedigree.
