In less than a month, Manifest will finally arrive on Netflix for its fourth and final season. The tragic season 3 finale of the former NBC show has had many cliffhangers, but it looks like we’ll finally have the resolutions for those plot points. One of the biggest developments in this episode saw Cal having hit his tail fin and disappeared, only to resurface another five years. And that’s going to be a major issue in the new episode series amid the already drastic time jump.
Manifest will resume two full years after the events at the end of season 3. With that, Cal will have been in this new adult for some time before viewers joined him in season 4. At New York Comic Con, Ty Doran, who plays the previous version of the character, explained how he will have problems after this sudden change (via uh):
He’s in this older body but he hasn’t matured to the level that would be appropriate for his stature now, I suppose. So he was weird … he’s like a kid. He is so upset, he has so many problems with his father and he really wants to help. It was interesting… Where it starts and where it ends are two very different places, and I think it’s really growing over the course of this season.
It looks like there are sure to be challenges for Cal when the show resumes, but it’s also interesting to know that he and Ben may not be as close as they once were. Even if it makes sense. Due to Grace’s death and Eden’s kidnapping, Ben probably spent all of his time looking for her daughter while he also tried to survive the date of her death, which will start in just 18 months of season 4.
Cal’s unexpected “growth spurt” is sure to change the dynamic between the characters substantially. And beyond his relationship with Ben, there’s also the question of whether he still has that special connection with the Called and 828. Even though he is now seven years older due to the time jump, she still has a lot to learn. and there will certainly be a lot of growing pains as he progresses through the season.
As for his dad, Ben is going to have a lot of trouble in Season 4, so it’s no surprise that he’s not exactly there for Cal as he should be. Ben’s mental state won’t be that good, and when we see him later he’ll even have grown a “sore beard”. These final episodes of the show are sure to be bittersweet, because while it’s great to have the show back, the producers are sure to give the characters hell. It will be emotionally exhausting for us, but it should be a really gripping story.
Manifest it’s Netflix-friendly and I’m sure the streamer can do the show justice as it prepares to wrap up its run. There is certainly reason to be nervous about Cal, Ben, and the other characters as they deal with other problems in the time jump. And with that, fans are sure to enjoy these final episodes.
