Chicago Police Department’s Benjamin Levy Aguilar talks about Halstead’s absence and Torres’ new “tricky” episode

Chicago police reported Benjamin Levy Aguilar as regular series for season 10 , after making a leap as a guest star in season 9, when Agent Torres teamed up with Detective Halstead. After Halstead’s groundbreaking play last week, Torres is about to draw attention to a long-running drama when a shocking murder takes place in his own neighborhood. The new star spoke to Gossipify about what’s going on, including Torres’ post at Intelligence following Halstead’s departure.

Torres didn’t just partner with Halstead his appearance in season 9 (streaming available with a Peacock subscription), but Jesse Lee Soffer’s character brought him to Intelligence in season 10 when they needed his particular skills. With “Donde Vives” airing on October 12, Torres will have to work on a big problem without his first mentor at hand. Benjamin Levy Aguilar explained how Halstead’s decision return to the army hits Torres, saying:

It hits you for sure. [Halstead] He was the one who welcomed him, and those times when it was hard to trust him, to trust him, there was this trust issue, it just made that relationship more beautiful, when he opened his heart at the end of the ninth season. I really think she will bring everything she has learned from Halstead and she has a lot of respect for him.

Torres may not have had much time with Intelligence prior to his big October 12 episode, but much of his development has come from his interactions with Halstead. Clearly, the character will not forget what he learned from the detective during his time in the same unit and what it meant for Halstead to welcome him. Aguilar continued:

It’s an interesting dynamic, because you’re learning from the other team members and building that respect with each of them as you get to know them, but you’re also testing the waters and holding on. . So I think there is definitely a gap. That said, it was Voight who helped him too, or agreed to take him in and all. There is a lot to learn there. But yeah, it’s definitely a little sad.

While all the signs indicate that the rest of the team welcomes each other (and they haven’t had a new member from Rojas in season 7 ), Torres joins a group of cops who have been working together since season five, when Tracy Spiridakos joined as a series regular. Amid all the connections and aftermath of Halstead’s departure, it’s easy to imagine why Torres might be keeping a secret.

So what happens when the new guy who can be left alone finds his personal life involved in an investigation? “Where You Live” will see Torres investigate a shocking murder in his own neighborhood, and the promotion clearly shows that the stakes are high. Benjamin Levy Aguilar explained how complicated the situation will be for Torres as the new intelligence man:

It’s definitely that complicated, because he has ties to that neighborhood, and he has friends there who would take a bullet for him, and maybe a bullet for him and vice versa. So he goes back and tries to unearth the skeletons of this story and this murder, which will shock people. It will also cause a lot of conflict where you have your siblings and family, and literally your mother. But it’s also scary that someone now becomes a police officer and finds out that his mother lives there with people who may want to hurt him, and this is probably the most important relationship in his life. So many conflicts.

While only the episode is visible for sure, Torres appears to be learning something that intelligence veterans have already figured out: working in this unit can negatively impact families. The character explained in season 9 that he lives with his mother, so he can backfire if he takes his work home with him … or takes his work to his own neighborhood. Benjamin Levy Aguilar shared that a “beautiful moment” is coming between mother and son that opens a window into her personal life:

I’m really, really excited that there is a good time to be him and her. I hope it’s not a spoiler, but he and she only speak Spanish, their native language, and I don’t think I’ve seen that many. I’m actually very proud that there is this moment where only two people speak a foreign language on NBC. There is no Spanish, just fluent Spanish and we learn more about their culture and way of being. It’s such a simple and beautiful scene.

Viewers will be able to see Torres and his mother speaking Spanish in what will be a “beautiful scene”. Chicago police it often includes sentences in Spanish and, as Aguilar noted, in Spanish, but not complete scenes involving a regular series. When I pointed out that the use of Spanish in network television is more prevalent here and there than in the middle of a conversation, the actor (born and raised in Guatemala) replied:

Exactly, exactly, exactly. That’s why I’m so excited about it. I was like, ‘Wow, I can only speak Spanish!’ By the way, I was like “Wow, ok, now I know how good it is to play in your language”. [laughs] I was like, ‘It was so much easier for me!’ It was a great experience to have her.

Benjamin Levy Aguilar’s comments on speaking Spanish for a prime time NBC TV show really echo What Chicago fire says Joe Minoso at the end of last season, suggesting that viewers will get to know Torres better at the end of “Donde Vives”. We can only hope that the cop and his mother are well in the end credits after the case takes place in their neighborhood!
