John David Washington has steadily climbed the Hollywood ladder with his impressive performances. Of course, there are many things that guided his decision to choose the same profession as his father, two-time Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington. For years, young Washington avoided Denzel’s shadow by playing sports. And now, with several films to her credit about her, the star has revealed why she hid from acting and she too describes the moment she realized she couldn’t escape her bloodline.
Before acting in films such as Start Yes Malcom and MariaJohn David Washington essentially “rebelled” against his father’s legacy by playing football at Morehouse College. For a few years he also pursued a career as a professional player. Washington was open to cb Sunday morning because sport was the best way to get away from his famous father’s legacy:
what motivated [my football career] it was independence, it was my own name, being able to carry my own weight in my life. Even though I hid what I really wanted to do, it gave me an identity. [I was hiding] because of which I am bound. My mother is an extremely talented artist and my father is one of the greatest of all time, he is my favorite actor. He was intimidating. When we are in the comfort of my home and with family, I feel comfortable. But then, when I got to the outside world, it didn’t seem that easy to chase it, and I felt that football would change that narrative when they saw me play ball.
Like any young man, the actor wanted an identity distinct from his parents’ chosen profession. Making a name for himself in football gave him the opportunity not to be just Denzel Washington’s son. Yet he wanted to be an actor even when he was a kid watching his father at the cinema Glory instrument. But he didn’t want to face those inevitable comparisons with his famous father. Interestingly, John David hid his desire to act so well that Denzel didn’t see his acting career coming.
While football should have given him the break he needed, things didn’t go the right way. As a runner at Morehouse, John David Washington quickly discovered that his father’s shadow also loomed in the world of sports. And that realization came in the form of a newspaper article:
This is what I thought would happen until I read the Atlanta Journal Constitution. I think it’s my first year and I’ve had a great game. [And the paper reads,] “Denzel’s son runs so many yards and so many touchdowns.” Then I realized it was inevitable.
I mean, let’s be honest, Denzel Washington’s name knows no bounds, which is why everyone points the finger at his son on a football field. Of course, John David Washington ultimately chose to accept his father’s legacy rather than run away from it. And this decision allowed him to pursue his passion for acting even after the end of his football career.
Today, young Washington will make his Broadway debut in a revival of August Wilson’s play. the piano lesson. He’s not “worried” about Denzel’s opinion, but he sticks to the lesson of not being afraid of failure when he takes the stage. The young man certainly works and I am happy that he no longer feels the need to hide from his vocation.
