Nickelbacks have gone viral on TikTok in the last few days and my millennial mind is having a hard time calculating the phenomenon. I had no idea that the popular group for hits like “How You Remind Me” and “Rockstar” were able to generate so much viral attention, especially not on the Gen Z TikTok platform.
Of course, I know that TikTok is used by people of all ages, and it seems that some of the women posting the viral videos were also likely interested in Nickelback during the band’s heyday and beyond. That’s right, it’s not even “How You Remind Me” that grabs the attention of viral videographers, it’s the song. “She She She’s Keeping Me Awake”, a 2015 Nickelback song recorded only in Canada.
In fact, Nickelback recently went viral after sharing a compilation of women who went through disco-themed viral transformations. (Disco music has been really all the rage lately.) The videos started popping up on the social media platform in September and usually feature the pre-makeup of a suddenly glamorous TikTok star.

It’s not even just a video that went viral. This one from Brittany Scovel at the Lake of the Ozarks last month garnered over 1.6 million views as of this writing.

Other videos from the same line also went viral. There seems to be a lot of crossovers between Nickelback fans and cowboy hat fans too, but maybe I’m just reading stuff. (No, I’m pretty sure there’s something about that, since Blake Shelton has called himself the “new Nickelback” and he likes cowboy hats too.)

The group then followed the trend this week after videos started going viral last month telling me they don’t spend much time on TikTok, and shouted at the women that they made “She Keeps Me Up” a viral song. . You can see his thanks Twitter below, which juxtaposes some of the women involved in the trend with the band’s music video for the song.

While this TikTok viral moment may be as fleeting as the trend from Minion and others before, the timing couldn’t be better. The Canadian band released a new single in September titled “San Quentin” before the release of their 10th studio album. While not as popular or praised as they were in their heyday (the group won a few Grammys for Hard Rock between 2003 and 2010), Nickelback is still touring regularly (or before the pandemic) and frontman Chad Kroeger has appeared in projects such as Diners, drive-ins and dives as well as the episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Yes Ellen De Generes’ show During last years. Not to mention this viral clip of Fred Savage and Deadpool singing “How You Remind Me”.
