“What is ‘best picture’? What does it mean?” This Tuesday, January 23, upon learning that his film Anatomy of a fall. Having earned five Oscar nominations, including one in the “best picture” category, Justine Triet could not hide her excitement.
In several videos published shortly after the announcement on the Instagram account of the company Les Films de Pierre, which produced her film, the director appears sometimes euphoric and sometimes crying.
“Damn it! It’s us!” he snapped at his producer Marie-Ange Luciani upon discovering his Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. The film won three more: best direction, best editing and best actress.
“I had an emotional bug”
Immediately contacted by BFMTV, Justine Triet said she was “super impressed” by the mechanism for announcing the Oscar nomination. “I screamed. We weren’t expecting so many nominations.”
Regarding his “bug” with the expression “Best Film” (“best film” in English), he confesses: “I had an emotional bug. I am very ashamed. It is obvious that my level of English is laborious. I have been taking classes,” he laughs.
“It is very moving”
The director also says she is very proud to appear in the “best director” category: “This category especially moves me because historically there are very few women who have had a nomination. I think I am the eighth woman who has been nominated.” It is very moving”.
And he added: “I was very excited to see my editor named (Laurent Sénéchal, editor’s note). I didn’t expect it at all. I was very moved. We spent eight months locked in a small room to find the code for the film. Knowing the name It’s super moving.”
This is the first time since Love by Michael Haneke in 2013 that a French film has received so many Oscar nominations. The artist by Michel Hazanavicius, however, still holds the French Oscar record with ten nominations.
In the race for the BAFTAs
The Passion of Dodin Bouffantwhich had been preferred to Anatomy of a fall. to represent France at the Oscar for best international film, is not among the five finalists in this category. But the director refuses to see the success of her film as a form of revenge against Trần Anh Hùng’s:
“What is very happy is that (Anatomy of a fall.) managed to overcome this category of best international film,” Justine Triet reacts. “Making films is very difficult. We are often in the shadows. The idea of holding an exhibition like this is extraordinary. That’s what matters above all. Competition between films doesn’t interest me much. “We are not athletes.”
Anatomy of a fall.which chronicles the trial of a writer accused of the murder of her husband, has won more than fifteen awards since its Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023.
In addition to its two Golden Globe wins (best original screenplay, best foreign language film), the film was a success at the 2023 European Film Awards and the 2024 Lumières. It is competing in seven categories at the BAFTAs , the British Caesars.
