Spoilers for Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night are yet to arrive, so proceed at your own risk.
werewolf at night represents a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The scary black and white horror thriller marks the first time monsters took center stage in the MCU and finally, director Michael Giacchino and his team introduced the new characters almost perfectly. Although fans took the title from Gael García Bernal werewolf (who is already touring Disney parks) , many have really fallen in love with their best friend: Man-Thing, aka Ted. The huge green creature added some fun to the spooky story but, as co-writer / executive producer Heather Quinn explained, it was also pivotal in opening up this new side of the cinematic universe.
In the TV special, the Man-Thing is revealed to be the creature that the assembled group of monster hunters hunt down in hopes of gaining control of the precious Bloodstone. But viewers were shocked when it was revealed that the creature was actually a friend of Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell, who sneaked into the hunt just to save him. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Heather Quinn, who she co-wrote werewolf at night with Peter Cameron, and he couldn’t help but ask her what it was like for her to work with Ted. She explained that while she enjoyed working with the classic Marvel Comics character, she knew she had to use him to answer a few key questions:
We didn’t know how many Man-Things we would get from the start. But once we knew we could have it and carry it, we were obviously thrilled. And it was so much fun to integrate [him into the story] is the answer. I mean, we liked the idea of telling a story, because, I guess one of the exciting things we had to do was introduce monsters and then bring that corner of [MCU] it’s like, ‘Okay, yeah. So we’re going to introduce you to the monsters, but who are the good and the bad in this room? And how do you know it? And what do you think of this? What does it mean?’
What Hawk eye scribe knocks is the idea that monsters in the MCU cannot be a monolith. It might be tempting to assume that they are all evil, but those who have read the comics surely know that there are layers of scary beings. And the friendly swamp creature formerly known as Dr. Theodore Sallis embodies this notion. Heather Quinn went on to explain the importance of establishing “definitions” for the terrifying monsters that will soon populate this vast superhero franchise:
Because every time you introduce something new, there are definitions that you play with for the first time. For example, if you present a monster, and it’s ugly, then there’s some sort of unconscious conclusion like, “Okay, so monsters are bad in this world.” And I think we really wanted to oppose any kind of … I think we wanted to challenge that and say, ‘Okay, well, the humans in the room are a little bit evil.’
And the one-hour special does a very effective job of establishing who the real “monsters” of the sad story are. Thanks to the work done here, it is absolutely clear that this universe will feature layered beings that will collide at night. Seriously, the show ends with Jack and Ted sitting down discussing what they want to eat. I can’t think of a better way to make these charming, yet somewhat enigmatic people easier to understand.
However, despite the good performance, werewolf at night still leaves someone with a series of questions . When can we see Jack and Ted again? Will they still tour together? Of course, there is also what Elsa Bloodstone awaits, especially now that she is using Bloodstone. Hopefully these questions will be answered soon, but until then we marvel (no pun intended) that Heather Quinn and company. he has laid an excellent foundation using the Man-Thing and his allies.
werewolf at night is available for streaming (opens in a new tab) with a Disney + subscription . Those who have seen it and are ready for more small-screen MCU tariffs should stay tuned for the next. wonderful TV shows and special.
