Friends star Matthew Perry reflects on addiction and how bad things are while filming the show

There are hit TV sitcoms, and then there are Friends. The beloved sitcom ran for ten seasons and is a phenomenon that is still part of the pop culture landscape. Actor Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing during this series and recently opened in his new book about his addiction problems and how things got worse while the show was still in progress .

Matthew Perry recently wrote a new memoir called Friends, lovers and the terrible big thing (opens in a new tab), which will be released with great fanfare next month. During a conversation with people , the 53-year-old actor will be genuinely open and vulnerable to the public regarding his substance abuse problems. What started with alcohol has turned into other vices such as the success of Friends started, sharing:

I didn’t know how to stop. If the police came to my house and said, “If you drink tonight, we’ll take you to jail,” I’d start packing. I couldn’t stop because the disease and addiction are progressive. So it gets worse and worse with age.

The Friends icon he is so transparent about his struggle with addiction in the hope that his book Friends, lovers and the terrible big thing it could be useful for those who have similar problems. As he recounts in his memoirs of her, at one point she was taking 55 Vicodin a day just to get away with it. And that’s how it worked Friends steadily for a decade.

Eventually, Matthew Perry admits he’s been in rehab 15 times over the years because relapses are often part of the healing process. He also had serious physical problems due to his years of drug use. Perry revealed that he nearly died a few years ago at the age of 49 due to a gastrointestinal perforation and a ruptured colon, which could explain its appearance during Friends special meeting .

When he promotes his book Friends, lovers and the terrible big thingthe Friends icon spoke to People about her recovery and why keeping track of her sobriety is an important part of the process. He said:

It’s important, but if you lose your sobriety, it doesn’t mean you lose all your time and education. Your sober date changes, but that’s all that changes. You know everything you knew before, as long as you can fight without dying, you learn a lot.
