Eighteen artists, 19 beatmakers and 20 tracks. Originally a simple Twitter account launched in 2016, the medium Raplume, followed by more than 760,000 people, publishes his second album this Friday The sun will rise in the west.
Its founder, Álvaro Mena, tells BFMTV.com about the genesis of this project where the most influential underground artists of the moment rub shoulders, such as Zamdane, BB Jacques, Ziak… and the folk singer Pomme.
French voice of John Snow
In 2020, Raplume presented their first album. birdsong. A multi-artist album of 15 songs around the theme of love. Two years later, it is with a new “more ambitious” project that the medium of rap is returning to music production.
Inspired by video games. The last of us or series The Walking Dead, The sun will rise in the west tells the story of a survivor of the apocalypse in music. Alone, he builds a radio and decides to share his adventure with the rest of the world.
“We searched for a theme that would allow us to explore as many musical and emotional elements as possible. The end of the world could be loneliness, it could be anger, rage, love… it’s really a universe that spoke to me already HZY, with whom I imagined the artistic direction of the album”, explains Álvaro Mena.
To maximize the narration of the album, interludes were added between the different themes, narrated by a voice familiar to those who saw it. game of Thrones in VF: that of John Snow in the French version of the series.
Showing off the next generation
To carry this album, Álvaro Mena appealed to 18 new faces of the French rap scene. We find among others the rapper from Marseilles Zamdane, the candidate of the program New schoolBB Jacques but also the Belgian artist Green Montana.
This list also includes another well-known voice of the French song, Pomme, present in the outro of the album.
“I really like the idea of breaking a 100% rap album with a song where she sings. I thought of Pomme for this exercise and she quickly appreciated the apocalyptic atmosphere. This title is a bit of a UFO but when you listen to the project, it becomes logical”, Alvaro says.
On the beatmakers side, the founder of Raplume has also drawn from those who have worked with the greatest, such as Diabi (Nekfeu, Nepal…), Heezy Lee (Niska, Booba), Boumidjal (Damso) or even Bink Beats, who just released his own mixtape drip music 2.
Two years after their first album, Raplume proves once again with The sun will rise in the west his desire to find a place in music production as an independent rap outlet. An experience that Álvaro Mena already sees himself reproducing as quickly as possible: “we already have the first title ideas for the next album…”
