Environmental activists tar the statue of King Charles III on display at a London museum

The wax statue of King Charles III was laid to rest at London’s Madame Tussauds on Monday by activists from Just Stop Oil.

Environmental activists from the group Just Stop Oil embedded a wax effigy of King Charles III in London’s famous Madame Tussauds museum on Monday, as part of a series of actions since the beginning of the month to demand an end to oil and gas exploration.

Two members of the group, who had bought their tickets, smashed a chocolate cake in the face of the king’s wax statue, declared conservationist Just Stop Oil in a statement.

In the action, one of the campaigners echoed the words of a late 2019 speech by Charles, then Prince of Wales, stressing that the young of his grandchildren’s generation “demand immediate action and not just words”.

“Stop new oil projects”

“The science is clear. The demand is clear: stop new oil and gas projects. This is a piece of cake,” activists Eilidh McFadden, 20, and Tom Johnson, 29, said in a statement.

Contacted by AFP, the museum did not immediately reply.

The Just Stop Oil group launched a series of daily actions and blockades in London in early October, where they notably threw soup on sunflowers Van Gogh at the National Gallery, or spray paint an Aston Martin dealership.

On Sunday, activists from the environmental group Last Generation threw mashed potatoes at grinders by Monet in a museum in Potsdam, Germany.
