“L’Amour ouf”: Gilles Lellouche’s “mix of genres” film presented at the Cannes Film Festival

The filmmaker took the step surrounded by François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos, his two protagonists, to present this long-awaited film.

It is one of the few French films selected in the official selection of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. love ugh, a new production by Gilles Lellouche, was screened on Thursday, May 23 on the Croisette. Five years after the public and critical success of The big bathroomThe actor returns behind the camera in this genre-blending feature film starring François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos.

The two actors paraded in Cannes in the company of their director and the rest of the cast, composed among others of Élodie Bouchez, Alain Chabat, Benoît Poelvoorde, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Raphaël Quenard.

Acclaimed for more than fifteen minutes at the end of its screening, love ugh takes place in northern France and follows the budding love of two teenagers, Jackie and Clotaire:

“She studies, he goes out,” explains the synopsis. “And then their destinies cross and it is a crazy love. Life will try to separate them but nothing works, these two are like the two ventricles of the same heart.”

Her story ends when Clotaire, caught in an organized crime case, receives a prison sentence. When she leaves, 10 years later, she sets out to find Jackie.

“The freedom to go almost everywhere”

Inspired by an Irish novel lent to him by Benoît Poelevoorde, love ugh It is a project matured by Gilles Lellouche for 17 years:

“I’ve had this novel in mind for a long time,” he explains to BFMTV. “It almost developed by itself in my head over time. The mix of genres, music, eras, the mix of feelings… I like when we are not stuck in a style and “we have the freedom, within the same style “. frame, to reach almost everywhere.”

“I wanted to make a generous film,” he concludes. “A film as a declaration of love for cinema and, furthermore, simply a declaration of love.”

We will have to wait for the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, this Saturday, May 25, to know if love ugh will appear in the list. The feature film will be released in theaters on October 16.
