It is one of the most popular and therefore most heartbreaking, “What if?” projects in the history of superhero films. After directing three blockbuster Spider-Man movies for Sony Pictures, Sam Raimi he wanted to leave the franchise at the top . Maybe he would have been at the top of the list. best Spiderman movies ? The director famously regretted using Venom (Topher Grace) as the villain in the blockbuster. spider man 3. So she started thinking about a possible spider man 4 would revert to the tone and plot of Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films … considered by many to be two gods best comedy movies it has never been done.
The long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man never happened , for many reasons. The studio admitted it was difficult to maintain the momentum of the first three films. The script didn’t fit. And keeping the creative core together became more costly, contractually, with each film that passed. Finally Raimi turned away from spider man 4 and Sony restarted the franchise with Andrew Garfield in the title role. But it meant that, for years, fans have wondered what it would be like if Raimi really got the chance to do his. spider man 4and continue the series that helped put Spider-Man on the Hollywood map.
Storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson worked with Sam Raimi’s team for spider man 4 for weeks before the studio pulled the plug. As such, he has an in-depth insight into the director’s plans for this never-released sequel. Henderson sat down for an exclusive interview for my new book. With great power: How Spider-Man conquered Hollywood in the golden age of blockbusters (available for order now (opens in a new tab)), and shared many of the tantalizing details he gleaned while drawing scenes for Raimi.
For starters, Henderson confirmed that The Vulture was going to be the main villain of the story, and that John Malkovich was the actor Sam Raimi planned to play like Adrian Toomes. Henderson said:
Basically he was a guy who did a lot of bad things for the government, he did a lot of bad things as a private contractor. I thought it would be smart to say that part of the reason they called him The Vulture was because when it was finished, all that was left was the bones.
Henderson’s concept art for The Vulture is split very evenly between the feathered Toomes we know from the comics and the mechanized tech suit that Michael Keaton ended up wearing. spiderman: homecoming. Some of the early story beats Jeffrey Henderson worked on were action sets, due to the time it took to plan and stage. The film would have included a long scene where the mercenaries tried to get past Toomes and eventually learned how powerful he was. Henderson and his colleagues also helped Raimi simulate a battle between The Vulture and Spider-Man that would begin on the subway before exploding onto the streets and skies of Manhattan.
Henderson said:
They would have had a huge fight for everything, where the Vulture nearly killed Spider-Man. And then Spider-Man at the last minute, he’s really hurt, he’s bleeding a lot, he’s in big trouble, Peter ends up, almost by reaction, forcing The Vulture to leave. When he does, he breaks part of the wing, then ends up falling into the ether, from the top of the Citicorp building. This is what brings it inside.
The second half of the film was rumored to have shifted gears towards Toomes’ daughter. She would become Vultress and Raimi and the studio turned to Angelina Jolie for the role of her. The film never got to the point of achieving all of this, but Henderson confirms, in the book, the idea that it would float. spider man 4, and it sounds incredibly good. He told me:
We were about to open the movie with this montage of all the villains we knew Sam could ever use in the Spider-Man movies. Because Peter, now that MJ is gone, has finally made up and loves being Spider-Man. He’s really enjoying himself. So we would try to do The Shocker, Mysterio, The Stilt Man and stuff like that.
And yes, Bruce Campbell I probably would have played Mysterio in this assembly sequence.
As mentioned, none of this has happened. spider man 4 drying . Sam Raimi returned to horror for Drag me to hell. And Spidey’s journey continued to the end in the MCU. I would say it worked mostly for everyone.
The following spider man 4 What we’re talking about will likely be Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie that could kick off a new trilogy of shared films between Sony, Disney and Marvel. Or, Dutch Spider-Man could return to Sony’s growing universe of Spidey characters, including Venom (Tom Hardy), Kraven the Hunter (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and Madame Web (Dakota Johnson).
