The American rap world is mourning the death of Takeoff, a member of the successful trio Migos, shot dead on Tuesday at the age of 28 in the early hours of the day outside a bowling alley in Houston, Texas. While light must be shed on the circumstances of his disappearance, his record company Quality Control Music states that the artist was killed by “a stray bullet.”
“It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved brother Kirsnick Khari Ball, who is known to the world as Takeoff,” an Instagram post read. “It is senseless violence and a stray bullet that has taken a new soul from this world and we are devastated.”
An ongoing investigation
According to BBCThe shooting took place around 2:30 a.m. local time on a balcony outside 810 Billiards and Bowling Alley, where a private party of 40 to 50 people was taking place. British media reports that Takeoff was playing dice there with Quavo, another member of Migos.
“I don’t expect him to be involved, but I want to wait for the investigation to be carried out,” local police chief Troy Finner told a news conference on Wednesday, as reported by Sky News.
“We have no reason to believe that he was involved in anything criminal as people describe him as a wonderful, peaceful and loving artist,” he added.
The group Migos, formed in 2008 by Quavo, his cousin Offset (Cardi B’s partner) and his nephew Takeoff, achieved success in 2013 with the single versace. Title Bad and Boujee took the trio to the top of the charts in 2016. Their albums yung rich nation (2015) and Crop II (2017) from Motown and Capitol Records were big hits, followed in 2021 by Crop III and his last title Untidyreleased on Tuesday.
