A series adapted from CarrieStephen King’s first novel, is in development at Amazon. Revealed by Deadline, this project is headed to Prime Video and will be directed by Mike Flanagan, who got his start on several critically acclaimed Netflix horror shows.
Published in 1974, the original book followed the tragic fate of Carrie, a high school student pursued by her classmates and an abusive mother, who discovered she had telekinetic powers. This reflection on bullying was first adapted in 1976 by Brian De Palma, with Sissy Spacek in the lead role.
Multiple adaptations
The feature film is considered a horror film classic: according to Variety, it generated $30 million at the American box office with a budget of $2 million. A sequel titled Carrie 2: Hatein which neither the original cast nor Brian De Palma nor Stephen King contributed, was released in 1999.
The novel was adapted again for American television in 2002 and then for film, in 2013, in a new version by Chloë Moretz and Julianne Moore. Additionally, a musical was presented on Broadway in 1988.
Few details have been leaked
A first release for this future eight-episode series, released by Hollywood Reporter, promises “a bold and current rereading.” The project is only in the early stages of development: casting is still unknown and no date has been mentioned.
Mike Flanagan is one of the new names in horror television and movies. In recent years, the filmmaker has signed several notable series on Netflix: The Haunting of Hill House, The Curse of Bly Manor, midnight sermons or even The fall of the house of Usher. He has also already adapted Stephen King to film, with Doctor Sleep in 2019 and Chuck’s lifeextracted from the story of the same title, expected for this year.
