The life of Alexandre Dumas’s father brought to the screen. According to the American media Variety, filmmaker Ladj Ly (Les Misérables) will direct a film about Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, father of the famous French writer.
Produced by Pathé and Dimitri Rassam – producers of Count of Monte Cristo and three musketeers – this feature film, called Dumas: black devilwill tell the life of this man, born a slave in the Caribbean in 1762 and who rose through the ranks to become the first black general of the French army.
Despite his numerous exploits, which earned him the nickname “Black Devil,” his role in the French Revolution was downplayed, Variety notes, and Napoleon Bonaparte even denied him a pension and a Legion of Honor.
“I was immediately captivated by the story of Dumas, the first black general in the French army. “I can’t wait to bring this story to the big screen as it will reveal a forgotten part of our history,” said Ladj Ly en. a press release.

Directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière, the films The three musketeers AND The Count of Monte Cristoadapted from the novels of Alexandre Dumas, have hit theaters.
Four months after its broadcast, The Count of Monte Cristo with Pierre Niney in the lead role it registered more than 9 million admissions. It thus becomes the second biggest film success of the year in France, behind something extra and the biggest success of Pierre Niney’s career, a record previously held by the film Yves Saint-Laurentreleased in 2014. The success of this feature film is such that it also allowed the book The Count of Monte Cristo to experience renewed interest in bookstores, 180 years after its release. The singer Calogero is also preparing a musical comedy adapted from the work of Alexandre Dumas.
