Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has been placed on sick leave for at least a week to recover from the side effects of treatment for her lung disease, the Royal Palace announced Wednesday.
Prince Haakon’s wife, 51, announced in 2018 that she was suffering from a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable lung disease that causes breathing problems.
“Due to the side effects of the medications the Crown Princess must take for her chronic lung disease, she is on sick leave, initially for a week,” the Palace said on its website.
“She won’t recover.”
The illness itself has forced Mette-Marit in the past to reduce or cancel her participation in official events.
“She won’t get better, but the disease is not getting worse that quickly. That’s what the doctors are working on,” Haakon confessed about his wife in an autobiography published last year.
“It has many good days. But uncertainty is always present. Should we cancel? We don’t know. Illness is also a part of life, as is facing difficulties together,” he added.
Mette-Marit recently came under the spotlight again due to the problems of her 27-year-old son, Marius Borg Høiby, born from a previous relationship and accused in particular of having attacked several girlfriends, the last time in August under the influence of alcohol. of alcohol and cocaine.
Asked by the Norwegian media, she insisted that she could not comment on the matter “out of respect for all parties involved.”
