Big screen adaptation of the famous Broadway musical, Wicked took the lead at the North American box office this weekend with one of the best releases of the year, ahead of the other big release Gladiator IIaccording to Sunday projections by the specialized firm Exhibitor Relations.
With $114 million in revenue, Jon Chu’s film, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the respective roles of witches Elphaba and Glinda, sets the record for the best start for a feature film adapted from a Broadway musical.
This record was previously held in the forestreleased in 2014, with 31 million dollars.
Third best start to 2024
Thanks to this success, Wicked It also has the third best start to 2024 in theaters in the United States and Canada with $114 million in revenue, only behind the superhero comedy Marvel Deadpool and Wolverine (211 million) and Vice versa 2 (154 million).
This feature film also offers the fourth best start in history for a musical in the United States, ahead of The Little Mermaid ($95.5 million) and behind frozen 2 ($130 million), according to Variety.
Created by Stephen Schwartz and presented on Broadway in 2003, the musical Wicked is both a prequel and a rewrite of the wizard of oz. Its film adaptation by Jon M. Chu, scheduled for December 4 in France, brings together Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum on screen.
