As several netizens pointed out, the Chinese version removed a lesbian love story at the center of the story. Kissing scenes between Vi and Caitlyn’s characters were removed.
In one of the last scenes, Caitlyn tenderly rests her head on Vi’s shoulder. In the Chinese version, Caitlyn and Vi were removed from certain shots to hide their interactions.
“Friends” censored
In recent years, the communist government has increased its censorship on “sensitive” topics such as sexuality, violence or politics, particularly in imported works.
In 2022, Chinese censorship had already removed any reference to the homosexuality of Carol, Ross’s ex-wife, in the series. Friends.
