However, despite its success, the program has been the subject of much criticism since its broadcast, in particular by the relatives of the victims who criticize Netflix for not having asked for their authorization before addressing their tragic deaths.

For his part, Lionel Dahmer, father of the serial killer, also confided that he does not appreciate that a series about his son’s crimes is produced without his consent. He decided to file a complaint against the streaming platform.

In an attempt to put an end to the controversy, series creator and producer Ryan Murphy recently came out of silence to try to explain what motivated him to make this series.

“We weren’t really interested in Jeffrey Dahmer as an individual, but what made him the monster that he became. We talk about that all the time. It’s a show about white privilege, about systematic racism, about the homophobia,” he told the media. . the hollywood reporter.

And to add: “During the three and a half years of writing we contacted 20 friends and relatives of the victims to talk to them, to find out their feelings and not a single person answered us.”
