Sean Penn gave President Zelensky his Oscar: “When you win, take it to Malibu”

The comedian visited the Ukrainian president this week, once again offering his support. On this occasion, he offered her one of the statuettes won from him at the Oscars.

He had promised to melt down his Oscars if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the ceremony last March. More than six months later, Sean Penn did not keep his word and preferred to offer one of his precious statuettes to the Head of State, to once again show his support for the country against Russia.

“This is for you,” the comedian said in a video shot by Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. “It’s a symbolic bauble, but I’ll feel better and stronger for fights knowing he’s here.”

And Sean Penn added: “When you win, bring it back to Malibu [où l’acteur habite, NDLR]because I’ll feel better knowing that a part of me is here.” President Zelensky then presented the actor with the Order of Merit, an award given to a person for outstanding achievement.

A commemorative plaque in his honor was also unveiled in Kyiv. “There are three places in the world that mean more to me than anything else. The place where my daughter was born. The place where my son was born. And this place. Thank you for that,” he said, he states.

Sean Penn is one of the Hollywood personalities who most supported Ukraine in its war against Russia. At the beginning of the year, the actor went there to shoot a documentary for the Vice studios.
