In March, Stephen King fans were told they were thrilled with the news that a THIS IS prequel series titled welcome to derry was in development for HBO Max. Unfortunately, talk about the project since then has been minimal … and that silence has been particularly troubling given the chaos behind the scenes this summer involving the subscription streaming service. Now, however, we finally have a major update on the project, as it’s reportedly moving forward with a new pair of showrunners.
According to Variety, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have been hired to lead the vision welcome to derry as the series progresses through development. At this point, it’s not entirely clear what we can expect from the show’s plot, but the exchange confirms that it will have continuity with blockbuster movies. IT: Chapter 1 Yes IT: Chapter 2 (Andy Muschietti, who directed both films, is on board as a producer with his production partner / sister, Barbara Muschietti.).
Fuchs – An actor and writer who plays Richie’s “manager” in IT: Chapter 2 and was also a co-producer, having already written the first episode based on a story he developed with the Muschietti. The new report also adds that Andy Muschietti could direct the premiere of the series, but it looks like the deal to make it happen has yet to be signed.
It was previously reported that welcome to derry will take place in the 1960s and the storyline will lead to the 1988/1989 events featured in IT: Chapter 1but the latest update doesn’t mention if that’s still the plan.
Jason Fuchs, who made his acting debut in 1996 Fin film starring Elijah Wood, has an established history with Warner Bros., having written the screenplays for Joe Wright Cooking pan with Hugh Jackman and Patty Jenkins wonderful woman. In 2018 she wrote the screenplay for I still see you with Bella Thorne (adaptation of Daniel Waters’ novel Break My Heart One Thousand Times). welcome to derry will mark the first time that Fuchs has worked with Brad Caleb Kane, who is a TV veteran at this point in his career, producing and writing reviews on shows such as Blindfolded, black candles, Warrior, lunar refugeYes vice tokyo.
What is sadly unclear at this point is when the gears will actually start spinning. welcome to derrybut this is certainly great news in itself, but not just because it confirms that the program is still in the works.
