Christmas movie season is upon us, thanks to upcoming movie love you violent night, fall in love with christmas and even A Christmas story of Christmas looking forward to making their upcoming debut. This year, the first film to win one for the Christmas cheer team is the musical Apple Original. Energeticwhich sees Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell team up to dance, sing and work their way through another riff on A Christmas carol.
With the film just out and the reviews dropping, let’s finally see what the critics are saying about this new Christmas film. As you can imagine with a new take on an old classic, the resulting answers are a bit mixed. We will start with what Peter Debruge mentioned Variety had to say, as it’s in the crowd that he’s most positive about what director Sean Anders’ latest hug has to offer:
It takes a while to warm up, but this musical update on a holiday classic, complete with some catchy new songs by Pasek and Paul, should be a great afternoon to watch this season.
It sounds like a cautiously optimistic take, if ever there was one, but it’s not that surprising. What the trailer for Energetic presented some interesting glimpses of what appears to be a divisive comedy, the encounter of the Ferrell / Reynolds machine with the songwriting prowess of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul seems like a killer combination. Kristy Puchko with masable noted both in her review of the project, with some additional caveats as to why she was ultimately disappointed with the final result:
Ultimately, Spirited is a good concept on paper that’s frustratingly frustrated by shoddy lines, confusing film coverage, and inept execution that ruins what should have been sensationally sweet and salty.
Songs and dances added A Christmas carol It’s not a new idea, but there’s still mileage in this approach if you have a new twist. Time Ryan Reynolds was nervous about this round implemented in Energetic, some critics still agree with what they saw. This is what collider Ross Bonaime’s had to say, as part of his positive take on this film:
Sean Anders’ musical twist on the Dickens classic makes some strange decisions, but his heart is in the right place.
No matter which side of the fence people seem to fall from, a confrontation was inevitable. Thanks to Will Ferrell for being cast as humorous Ghost of Christmas Present and his pedigree as a holiday luminary thanks to his classic role in Elf, this movie is just waiting to be invoked when it comes to its latest yuk Christmas festival. Josh Spiegel inside /Movie made that link in his review, although the following isn’t exactly jovial:
A film like Elf, as the opening credits suggest, seems to have come to life from a children’s book. Spirited evokes the feeling that it came to life from a series of focus group sessions between business leaders.
Jude Dry a IndieWire who saw the good in Energetic. Even with a comparison with director Jon Favreau’s bizarre factory of joy, Dry made this positive observation:
The Christmas musical is a light A Christmas Carol riff that will delight fans of Elf, tap and Octavia Spencer.
Where is it Energetic is in the middle numerous adaptations of A Christmas carol remains to be seen, due to his new debut on the scene. There is a lot of competition out there that needs to be checked and the general consensus on the film as an individual offering remains to be seen.
If that critical screening is any indication, it looks like Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell’s latest will be a good film to discuss on the Christmas table for a while. Those of you who are ready to decorate hallways with Christmas cheer Energetic has to offer, you can start planning to do it right away. That is, if you can make it to its theatrical release on November 11th.
