Wakanda is clearly still a Marvel property, with all the story beats for fans and secondary characters that its ever-expanding universe needs, but it also feels separate from all that preceded it. And while Black Panther without Boseman certainly doesn’t sound like the creators of the film or any of the actors, the film they made feels like something unusually elegant and profound for the multiplex – a bit of eternity for the missing star too soon.

Wakanda Forever falls short of its predecessor, an extraordinary endeavor that combined Boseman’s seriousness and masterful acting with Coogler’s talent for mundane storytelling. But the sequel offers a similar technical feat: the costumes and set design are nothing short of amazing, and the plot points in the original film bear fruit and have consequences in the latest film, which also deals with T’Challa’s death in a very real and authentic way.
